In 1867, Midway became the first offshore islands to be annexed by the US government. Valued because it lies halfway between Hawaii and Japan, it was coveted by the Japanese who hoped to use it as a stepping stone towards a future invasion of Hawaii. Made famous in the movie "The Battle of Midway", the island was attacked and the US defeated the Japanese in a battle that proved to be the turning point of World War II.
Today Midway is a pristine, secluded atoll teaming with wildlife. It is the nesting place of countless species of birds, endangered sealife and there are more dolphins in and around the islands than residents and visitors put together. Recreational activities such as fishing, diving, snorkeling, photography and birding are outstanding opportunities to experience and learn about the fish and wildlife that depend on these remote atolls for their survival. |
